Calf Turnout

We are coming to the time of year when most calves are being let out to grass. Getting calves out to grass tends to help reduce the workload on farmers, however it’s essential that calves are well looked after even when let out. It’s important to make sure they are eating 2kg plus of concentrates and lots of straw before turnout and maintain this feeding when they are let out.

An average daily weight gain of 0.8kg/day is the target over the first summer and to achieve these gains is recommended to provide 1-2 kg of concentrates per head per day, especially in the first 4-6 weeks post turnout to help continue rumen development.

Drummonds have a range of quality calf feeds available ranging from high protein rations such as our Calf follow on 17% ration formulated for high growth rates and high palatability, to our cubed feed range such as our Calf Grower Nuts with quality protein and highly digestible fibres suitable for calves from weaning throughout the growing phase. Our Weanling creep 16% coarse ration is also another option as the calf’s progress through the growing season. This ration helps drive daily weight gain while still containing enough protein to grow the frame. We also have a wide range of other rations or nuts available to suit your needs.
